They were designed to be a hybrid of a heavy tank and a flamethrower, equipped with the ATO-41 flamethrower in a fixed turret instead of a traditional turret. This design was based on the KV-1S chassis, which allowed for the use of 80% of production components, expediting prototype development. The KV-8s were used by the Russians in all fronts of WWII and were organized in special separate flamethrower tank battalions.
