Production began in December 1943, and by early 1944, about 100 JS-2s were in service. The tank was known for its excellent maneuverability and was extremely reliable, despite not being as well-armored as the Tigers. The JS-2's design was typical of Soviet mechanized warfare, with a pair of track systems dominating the vehicle sides and working with six road wheels. The turret was placed forward in the design, providing maximum forward protection and a long-barreled 122mm main gun that protruded from the front end of the hull. The engine was a 600-horsepower diesel-powered 12-cylinder V2, allowing for top speeds of 23 miles per hour in ideal conditions.
