The Panzerlok BR57 was a crucial part of the German military's armored train strategy during World War II. It was designed to provide protection for the locomotive and its cargo, making it an effective tool for the Wehrmacht.

The BR57's role in the Wehrmacht's armored train class, the BP 42, was significant, as it represented several armored trains produced to be used mostly on the eastern front at the end of December 1942. The Wehrmacht took over old railway protection trains in 1937 and converted them into armored trains, capturing and converting many more trains as the war progressed. By 1941, the Wehrmacht had a colorful collection of 18 differently configured armored trains, each with its own unique characteristics and equipment.
